Actually, I have two. The old fashioned kind, poor thing, it is no good right now. It stops at -20 F.
Apparently, the digital one stops here:
Can you see the bottom left corner? It says -40.0 F.
According to the call in line, the local temp is -45.4 F
The top right side is the temp in the house near the wood stove.
The math there...a temperature difference of 121.9 degrees.
Even my poor wood stove can't keep up. The back half of the house has kicked over to the radiant floor heating that uses fuel. I am SO glad they are coming to refill the tank on Tues. I only have 60 gallons left, as of yesterday. We were only using about 2-3 gallons a day, but not sure what it will consume at this temp.
Trivia time: Did you know that at -40, the thermometer flip flops? At that point Celsius and Fahrenheit switch places in numbers. Good grief!
So, what am I thankful for today?
1) A warm house, and enough wood and fuel to keep it that way.
2) a house full of groceries. We stocked up in prep for this weather.
3) A hubby who works hard to provide both of those things!
4) A full "craft" bucket that will hopefully keep my crew entertained for a few hours these next few days.
5) New Active Life Wii games that will give my crew some exercise.
6) A phone and internet so that I don't go bonkers locked in a house in the cold with 4 kids and two dogs.
7) The fact that we are homeschooling, and I don't have to figure out how to get the kids to school in this weather! Right now, even the power steering in my car is not working well. It is like driving a tractor...so I am NOT driving. It really isn't safe to go out in this anyway. Most activities shut down at -30 or -35 anyway. Even the youth center on base closes at -50.
8) The hope that this won't last to terribly long. Friends tell me it comes in waves of about a week or so at a time, then it "warms" back up to above -20, which believe it or not, is totally do-able. -20 doesn't bother us at all.
If you do think of us these next few days, send up a prayer or two for sanity and safety...would ya? Thanks!
I had to read this one to my hubby, who was born and raised in Fairbanks. He got a kick out of it and recalled fond memories of wearing shorts and a tank top when his family vacationed to WA to visit family and it was a sweltering 40 degrees F. Praying for your safety during these extremely cold days.
ReplyDeleteI just saw this.
ReplyDeleteI started praying right away:)
I think at times it almost sounds heavenly to be on lock-down with the world outside at a stand still...or freeze ( you pick, lol). As lovely as it sounds, I know that it can get a bit cramped especially with 4 sweet darlings. Sending warm hugs your way...<>
BTY, I think Your phone will be ringing soon!
